Killdeer 5239

I hadn't seen a killdeer in at least six months, and then this one showed up at the slough standing off to the side of wading-

and shorebirds. I thought perhaps they'd be back in numbers in January, but even this one is gone. Confusing that they're residents and I've seen them in mud flats, grasslands, marshes but never more than two or three at any one time. The only constant is that they always look apprehensive and "sad" and that doesn't matter what season it is although it is heightened when she has a cluth of eggs to protect.
