Princess Etch a Sketch
Greenwold assignment: Chaotic Serenity
This piece was done on black matting board, which is why it has the pebbled effect. This piece took me about 16 or so hours, all with prismacolor colored pencils. It is relatively big, at 24" x 30". I tried to make this piece very personal by adding me (bottom left corner) and my dad (bottom right corner) as though he is escaping from his grave. Samus was added upon request but I added her to give a dimensional warp between the two stories by showing her from both prespectives (see her feet above in the doorway). I decided to put a statue of atlas upside down in the picture to represent the abstractness that was supposed to be accomplished within this piece, and I feel as though I can relate to atlas at times, because sometimes I feel as though I am carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. I know that I am just an immature teen who thinks they have it rough, but to tell you the truth, I know that I am in a very awesome position. I do not think "why me?" because I find that sort of thinking to be a waste of time. But I thought that sometimes the weight of art and academia both colliding on me can be quite cumbersome, and atlas was the best visualization I could think of for the representation of my thoughts. I placed the dragon within the piece because I wanted to make the distortion in space more obvious, and I like dragons :P
I put a lot of planning and consideration into this piece, about 15 pages of sketches in my sketchbook and over a dozen references. I am not all that satisfied with the final piece, though. The pink wall ruined it all for me. My toughest problem is developing a color scheme, which I feel has always been difficult for me, considering I have only a year or so of experience with color, and I have not developed an eye for it yet. I also had to rush on the final portions of this piece. But I am going to finish it up at a later time, possibly this summer.
