Arco da Rua Augusta

The "Arco da Rua Augusta " or also "Arco do Triunfo da Rua Augusta" is an arch located in the northern part of the "Rua do Comércio", on "Rua Augusta" in Lisbon, Portugal.

Its construction began after the 1755 earthquake, specifically in 1775, but this first version was demolished in 1777 (after the start of the reign of "D. Maria I" the Queen and dismissal of the "Marquês de Pombal").

In 1873 starts the construction of the bow according to the project's architect "Veríssimo José da Costa" dating back to 1843/44, getting the work completed in 1875.

At the top of the arch you can see the sculptures of "Calmels", while a lower plane we can see sculptures "Vitor Bastos."

The sculpture "Calmels" represent the glory, crowning the Genie and the value. The sculpture "Vitor Bastos" represent "Nuno Álvares Pereira" , "Viriato" , "Vasco da Gama" and "Marquês de Pombal."

The text inscribed on the top of the arc takes us back to greatness during the Portuguese discoveries and the discovery of new peoples and cultures:

VIRTVTIBVS MAIORVM VT SIT OMNIBVS DOCVMENTO.PPD “Às Virtudes dos Maiores, para que sirva a todos de ensinamento. Dedicado a expensas públicas”.

Press "L" key for better view.
