Hulleys 10

Hulleys Optare Solo M880SL MX56ACF (10) seen rounding the infamous U bend near Cressbrook while working the 12:05 Bakewell-Castleton 173.

Most journeys on the generally bi-hourly 173 run via Wardlow, however four a day divert via Cressbrook and Monsal Dale in order to provide the area with a bus service. This means negotiating the hairpin bend depicted, no problem for a vehicle such as this Solo however a more trying exercise in the full size saloons frequently employed by current operator Hulleys and former operator Stagecoach. As such, a reverse is often required for larger vehicles to make it round, particularly on the way down. The angle of the turn also raises clearance issues which led Hulleys to ban low floors from Cressbrook journeys until modernisation made their usage inevitable. Indeed, there are various scratch marks on the road where numerous vehicles have grounded in the past.
