The 171 has lived a charmed life in recent years, reduced to a handful of journeys per day in favour of a revised 178 in May 2018 before being withdrawn entirely in May 2020, again replaced by the 178 (and short-lived 179). The service returned on a two-hourly basis in October 2020 but was whittled back to a schoolday return trip in January 2021, with the 172 instead routed up to Middleton. This arrangement lasted for a year until the 171 made another return, again on a largely two-hourly basis.
