NS Locomotive Simulator

An interior view of the simulator shows a railway engineering student trying his hand at the throttle of a virtual train of 97 cars and two SD60s ascending the 1% grade at South Fork, KY on the CNO&TP Second District (a.k.a. "The Rathole"), north of King's Mountain.

A standard control stand and WABCO brake system is to his left. Two smaller screens show the track profile (note the grade), train forces and performance graphs. The projection screen shows the exteroir view, and the colored lights to the right repeat the aspect of approaching signals when they are within viewing distance (the quality of the laser disc technology makes the signals difficult to see on-screen.)

Coincidentally, the simulator was designed and built at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1992.
