Ryoanji Seigenin

The vegetarian restaurant (with nothing but tofu soup on the menu) is inside the Ryoanji Temple, in the Seigenin building situated by the Kyoyoike pond- a 1000-year-old Koi pond with thick, carpet like moss coverage around it.

 

During our meal the owner constantly sprayed the moss with a garden hose to keep them moist and stimulate growth. A lot of effort is put into this seemingly informal garden.
