Whitley County Jail - Sheriff's Residence, Columbia City, IN
On Monday we found ourselves unexpectedly in Columbia City, Indiana, near Ft. Wayne. The first thing I spotted that made my jaw drop was this Second Empire Jail and Sheriff's Residence that appears to be in pristine condition. Even the color of the paint on the trim looked ancient and reminded me of the colors that remained on old buildings into the Fifties and Sixties. Currently it is owned by a car dealership and is used once a year as a "haunted jail." That explains the three coffins out front.
The cornerstone lists the architect as J.C. Johnson, the Contractor as J.M. Bratton & Co., the stone cutter as Wm Carr and the date of construction as 1875. I couldn't see any details on the outside that had been altered.
