Old Jail Detail

This beautiful old jail in Angola, Indiana was constructed in 1878 and included a sheriff's office and residence. It was placed on the National register in 1976 but continued to function as a jail until 1992. It has been restored to its original appearance as much as possible with a reconstruction of the steps, porch and entrance. The colors used in the exterior woodwork are perfect for the building but it would be so much better if the roof could be redone in slate. Downtown Angola has some interesting old architecture but this has always been my favorite building there.

Apparently this extravagance is typical of the time period as architecture for jails. Nearby Goshen originally had a pretty Victorian jail that was replaced with a concrete monolith, which is now itself obsolete. Neighboring Whitley County also has a Second Empire jail and sheriff's residence that looks like an old mansion and is used as a haunted house for Halloween.
