Wynbring Dam

Wynbring is a long-defunct siding on the Trans Australian Rail line in South Australia, between Tarcoola and Ooldea.

In the days of steam, there had to be a watering point every 60 km as that is about as far as the engines could go with the water reserves they carried on-board.

To achieve that they obviously had to have a water source, and many of them had 'Government Dams' built at them. They usually took advantage of large rocky outcrops, and built stone and concrete walls to channel the rain runoff that these natural features provided.

This was the purpose of Wynbring Dam - to supply the early steam trains with water. It now just provides a supply for local fauna.
