2015-04-25 - Farina Dawn Service (7)

Just returned from Farina, where we attended the ANZAC Day Dawn Service there in the company of 150 others who had made the pilgrimage to this little, deserted township.

From a population of 240 in 1914, and 200 in 1939, Farina supplied some 30 volunteers for each of the wars. This would have been felt as a huge commitment for the little community, with eight of them never to return.

This service on the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli was dedicated to those eight, and memorial plaques were unveiled to remember them. Lest We Forget

After the dawn service atop the small hill overlooking the campground, we returned back down to our tent to await the start of the Gunfire Breakfast put on by the Farina Restoration Society.

As the sun rose to a point where it was visible to us down at the camping area, I was presented with this scene, and couldn't get the camera out quick enough.

They shall grow not old

As we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them,

Nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,

We will remember them

Lest we forget.
