It's funny because the maitre d' looks funny?

When I saw this on the counter at Rite Aid, I knew I had to have it, because (as readers of The Comics Curmudgeon know, this is not uncommon for Archie) I just couldn't parse the "joke".

My first thought was, "It's funny because Veronica expects Betty and Archie to share a chair, and she will sit across from them at the two-top."

But that made little sense.

Then I thought, "Oh! She doesn't know they're behind her. She's getting a table for herself and Archie, whom she presumes is arriving shortly, which he is, but he forgot that he had plans with Veronica, and is with Betty, and uh-oh."

Nah.

Then I surmised, "Oh! They're nervous because they couldn't get a table there without her help, and she's doing them a favor."

Veronica? Probably not.

Why is it funny? Is it funny? Where is Archie's left hand?
