Komatsu HD785-5 with 250 ton TowHaul Trailer

Lowboy for the transport of heavy equipment in mining applications in scale 1:28.5

The TowHaul system consists of a mining truck - minus its dump body - converted into a towing vehicle plus a lowboy trailer. The tractor is fitted with a goosneck that allows to pick up a single axle trailer with the load to be transported. The latter one usually consists of tracked mining equipment, like bulldozers, hydraulic shovels and blasthole drills, that have a slow travel speed. Transporting them by truck speeds up the relocation of equipment and saves on wear of the crawler track.

The truck in this creation is a Komatsu HD785-5 which was a former 100 ton mining dump truck. After removing the dump body, a goosneck on a turntable plus mudguards were fitted.

The trailer is loaded from the front and can be picked up by the goosneck of the tow tractor. Its load rating is 250 tons (227 tonnes). Sufficient for example for a Komatsu D575A-3 Super Dozer (165 tons) or a O&K RH 120 C (240 tons).

My model is remote controlled using a single SBrick and is powered by a Power Functions rechargeable battery box. It features the following four functions:

- Drive: 1 Power Functions XL motor

- Steering: 1 Power Functions servo motor

- Goosneck: 1 Power Functions L motor

- Goosneck support: 1 Power Functions M motor
