Chicago: 23 AUG'70
With Lou Gerard's fine view of the "Detroit Edison" parting the waters of the Calumet River by this bridge in 1973, I remembered I had scanned this one a few months ago, of C&O C630, GP35 (2100-3534) leading an eastbound freight at "River Branch" across the Calumet River. I think I spent only one day at this spot, where three railroads paralleled and crossed the Calumet: Penn Central's former PRR and former NYC routes, and the B&O. Corrections are welcome; my memory of 44 years past is less than ideal, but I recall the "Pennsy" looked pretty good compared to the weed-choked NYC, and this line was protected with Color Position Light signals (as in B&O.) As bad as the Route of the Century looked, I recall a piggyback train going by on it, but I'd have to look back through those slides to check on my memory. For all the places around Chicago where I visited and could have seen one of these Big Guys, I'm sure this is my only sighting.
