Breaking Through
Growing up, that image of a small plant breaking through a crack in the pavement was always a symbol of the strength and imperviousness of nature. That it was a force that could not be held back, and that, if humanity some day walked the path of self destruction, nature would prevail and flourish in our absence.
Today, I'm not so sure anymore. There is strength, but also fragililty in nature. The human race is tenacious and we will likely fight our homegrown demise until the bitter end, giving progressively less care to how our actions affect our home. We may see a scenario where humanity goes down kicking and screaming, leaving nothing but desolation in our wake.
Still, while within us there seems to be a pattern of destructive behavior fueled by greed, we have also been given much in the way of ingenuity and the will to do what is right. The future may very well hold wonderful solutions to mend some of the havoc we have wreaked, if we decide to channel our creative nature into the right sort of endeavors.
Our fate is closely tied to the world around us, and we still hold much of the power to control our joint future. The question is, what do we use that power for?
