EMC DELIVERS NEW PRODUCTS THAT MEET GROWING INDUSTRY DEMAND FOR SAFE, FAST, LARGE CAPACITY INFORMATION STORAGE

Symmetrix Capacity Storage Products Open New Markets For EMC

NEW YORK, NY--EMC Corporation today announced three new mainframe disk storage subsystems, including the capability to put a terabyte of information into 17 square feet -- slightly more floor space than the average desk. These new Symmetrix Integrated Cached Disk Arrays (ICDA) allow EMC to meet the demands of customers requiring very high capacity storage, requirements that are critical in the highly competitive global business environment.

The new Symmetrix 5500-9 (with a capacity of one terabyte), 5200-9 and 5200-3 incorporate the latest hardware and software technology through EMC's MOSAIC:2000 architecture. This architecture provides customers with advanced functions as their storage needs grow. For many leading corporations around the world, the toughest business challenge is to effectively store, access and safeguard their ever-growing repository of critical business information. Symmetrix provides an integrated series of solutions that meet the challenges of dealing with the corporate information explosion.

“If you were to bottle the needs of the average data center, you would find that there is an overwhelming need to store and access greater amounts of information,” said Barry Bosak, Technology Analyst at Smith Barney Shearson. “A high capacity disk array should have great appeal to a majority of mainframe users. EMC's new terabyte product is well positioned to meet that need.”

With these new products, EMC is rewriting the standards for high capacity and performance storage. With EMC's ICDA technology, users in industries such as finance, transportation, retail and healthcare can gain a competitive advantage because they can store more of their company's critical information and access it faster.

“These new products are the result of our customers asking us for larger and larger volumes of storage,” said Michael C. Ruettgers, EMC's President and CEO. “The new Symmetrix models allow EMC to provide customers with an even wider range of storage solutions to meet their needs for capacity, performance and availability.”
