Rich Napolitano, President, Unified Storage Division, EMC
Rich Napolitano is President of the Unified Storage Division, one of the core product divisions within the EMC Information Infrastructure Products Group at EMC Corporation.
In his role leading EMC’s Unified Storage Division, Napolitano oversees R&D, divisional product management and marketing, and operations for EMC’s midrange storage platforms, and advanced storage management products. The Unified Storage Division has approximately 2000 employees, with engineering operations in 8 countries.
Specifically, Rich’s portfolio includes the award-winning VNXeTM and VNX TM system solutions; industry acclaimed Unisphere® Management Software, and value added storage software available as part of the division’s replication and data protection software including storage software solutions.
Napolitano has driven the development of the VNX family, one of the fastest growing product families in the history of EMC. The VNX is EMC’s next generation midrange storage architecture, focused on delivering storage solutions that are dramatically more simple, efficient, powerful and affordable for physical and virtual environments. The VNX family is made up of the VNX and VNXe. The VNX combines all the benefits of EMC’s previous generation Celerra® and CLARiiON® into a single unified storage brand while adding significant performance, value, and functionality. The VNXe, recipient of several product of the year awards in the first year of its life, is a new EMC unified storage offering designed for IT managers with limited storage expertise in small and medium businesses, remote office/branch offices of enterprises, and department deployments in the enterprise and commercial markets. USD solutions target next generation datacenters as well as public and provide cloud implementations.
In addition, Napolitano is responsible for new business development, working with EMC’s executive management team to strengthen EMC’s storage portfolio, grow share, and enrich EMC’s overall solutions portfolio. He reports to Pat Gelsinger, President, EMC Information Infrastructure Products, and is based at EMC’s corporate headquarters in Hopkinton, Massachusetts.
With 30 years of experience in the IT industry, Napolitano has served in a wide variety of roles, including CEO, executive technologist, S/W developer, sales leader, entrepreneur, and board member ranging startups to global technology enterprises. Prior to EMC, he was President of U.S. Sales at Sun Microsystems (acquired by Oracle). He was also a general partner in the venture investment and management firm Alchemy Angels and an early investor in and CEO of Pirus Networks, a developer of intelligent storage switches, which was acquired by Sun. In addition, he founded several technology startups and consultancies, where he served as CEO, and which were later acquired by Adobe Systems and Adaptec. Napolitano started his career at Digital Equipment Corp as an operating system software developer.
Napolitano holds a BS degree in Computer Science from the State University, Stony Brook, NY.
With 2011 revenues of $20 billion and over 50,000 employees, EMC Corporation is a global leader in enabling businesses and service providers to transform their operations and deliver IT as a service. Fundamental to this transformation is cloud computing. Through innovative products and services, EMC accelerates the journey to cloud computing, helping IT departments to store, manage, protect and analyze their most valuable asset — information — in a more agile, trusted and cost-efficient way.
