On top of the Vesuvius. A walk around the Gran Cono. Panorama of the crater of the Vesuvius (1,281 m.).

The Vesuvius is famously known for its catastrophic eruption in AD 79 that buried the ancient cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii.

While visiting the Amalfi Coast, the weather promised to be very good for a visit to the top of the Vesuvius. It was a perfect day; sunny, no wind and nice temperature.

The summit of Vesuvius is open to visitors, and there is a small network of paths around the cone of the volcano. There is access by road to within 200 metres (660 ft) of the summit (measured vertically), but after that, access is on foot only. There is a spiral walkway around the volcano from the road to the crater.

Going up the path of the Gran Cono is a unique experience, for the thrill of walking along the crater of an active volcano and for the view of Campania and Lazio you can enjoy.

Mount Vesuvius is a somma–stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 km (5.6 mi) east of Naples and a short distance from the shore.
