Of course, not all great square images have the subject perfectly centered in the frame. Off-center subjects can be just as (if not more) effective. This is a great example of a highly effective off-center image, due largely to the impact of the text, as well as the contrast and depth of field.

There are many elements at play in this image that are balanced well to make an effective image. First, the color is wonderful, but not distracting. Second, the consistent horizontal lines across the frame add pattern, which is broken up by the circular window in the top right corner. Finally, the shape of the boat and the bird help to lea your eye around the square frame.
