from Angel Island

Last weekend I took a ferry to Angel Island for my very first time. It was the entry point for immigrants entering from the West Coast / Pacific Ocean. I went with a group of immigrant rights activists from many different organizations and communities of faith and we were able to tour the old barracks where the men were held. Asian men and boys were in a different section than their white counterparts from Russia and parts of Europe - though only separated by a wall and eating at separate times. The barracks existed from 1910 - 1940. (The Chinese Exclusion Act was in force from 1880 - 1943 so there's lots of stories about how some made it through the barriers.

It was a very overcast and sometimes misty day and the beauiful pathways often looked out at the ocean and nearby Marin County.
