Boulevard Maréchal Joffre, Beaune - Théàtre de verdure

In Beaune (after leaving Patriarche). After walking past the ramparts around the north east corner of the town centre, we went back into the centre of the town via Rue du Château. We were heading towards the Hôtel-Dieu.

The Théâtre de Verdure (Theatre of Green or Outdoor Theatre) is a park of 3000 m2 located in the moat at the foot of Bastion St Anne created in the location of the town’s former shower baths. Pleasantly shaded and flowery, this place is a haven of peace where you can rest, relax or picnic. In summer, the Théâtre de Verdure is the venue for various local events.

Before becoming a garden, this area, dating from 1813 (Alphonse Forest as primary contractor[CR1] ), was for many years the "shared bathroom of the people of Beaune". The public shower baths were in the building at the centre of the garden.

In the 1960s, a raised stage and terraces were installed in the park to create an outdoor theatre; and so was born the Théâtre de Verdure. You could watch wrestling matches, variety artists (Claude François, Annie Cordy...). In the 1970s, the site was turned into a car park until the late 1990s. That's when the town of Beaune renovated the site, restoring its value and beauty of years gone by.

Laid out as a composite garden, the Théâtre de Verdure offers various styles of Garden Art: medieval, French-style, Italian and English.

You can also admire a water mirror recalling the channelled river that fed the moat.
