Kitsune

Kitsune are a type of yōkai, or spiritual entity, and the word is often translated as fox spirit. One of the two common classifications of kitsune, the zenko (literally good foxes), are benevolent, celestial foxes, said to be Inari’s messengers. They are believed to possess superior intelligence, long life, and magical powers. Kitsune usually come in pairs, with ceremonial red bibs. They have a key in their mouth, to the rice granary, but a jewel, a sheaf of rice, a scroll or a fox cub are also common. Restaurants on mount Inari sell Kitsune Udon ("Fox Udon"), a noodle soup topped with pieces of abura-age (fried tofu), a treat supposedly favored by foxes (which are carnivores?).
