The Air Medal With "V" Device
The United States of America
To all who shall see these presents, greeting: this is to certify that the President of the United States of America authorized by Executive Order, 11 May 1942 has awarded
The Air Medal With "V" Device
To George L. Gavaria (Then Specialist, United States Army)
For heroism while participating in an aerial rescue flight, while assigned to C Troop, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), Republic of Vietnam. On 29 January 1966, Specialist Gavaria distinguished himself by heroism in action while serving as Crew Chief, Gunship 015, in support of the rescue operation for Project Delta Team Capital Operation Number 2-66 in An Lao Valley, Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Gavaria's gunship entered the fog-covered valley under heavy enemy fire, delivered rocket and massive suppressive fires, forcing enemy troops away from the besieged patrol. Totally disregarding the dangers of poor visibility, low cloud cover and heavy enemy fire in the An Lao Valley, Specialist Gavaria displayed extreme valor in his efforts to save the friendly force from total destruction and subsequent loss of vital intelligence gathered by the long range patrol. Specialist Gavaria's extraordinary heroism is in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
Given under my hand in the city of Washington
