JDS Akizuki (DD-161)

Following the end of the Second World War in 1945, Japan was forced to abdicate the use of Armed Forces but shortly after, in 1954 the Americans allowed the Nation to rebuild their Armed Forces, this time exclusively for defense. Since Communism was growing in Asia and the United States didn´t want to spent their money and troops defending a defenseless Japan, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (or JMSDF) was therefore created.

First, Japan used some of their WW2 surviving ships together with American built ships, but they then very rapidly restarted construction of new ships. With the appearance of large quantities of the new Soviet “Whiskey” Class submarine (built with technologies taken from the German Type XXI submarine), Japan strongly invested their money on the development of Anti-submarine Warfare (ASW) with ships, planes and eventually helicopters.

The fresh memory of hunger and materials deprival for the industry caused by the American Submarines during the Second World War was the main motivator for this new objective.

Therefore, in 1958 the construction of two “flotilla leader” Destroyers of the Akizuki Class was started.
