Tour de France Peloton Echelon
Another shot from this year’s Tour de France. A little different this one as the front riders are seen spread way across a wide road. This shot was on Stage 8 in Northern France from Dreux to Amiens. The location is in the village of Marseille-En-Beauvaisis 53 kilometres from the finish in Amiens. I had chosen a sharp bend looking down a hill coming up through the town. This gave the opportunity to get head on shots of the riders unobstructed by spectators. I had some worries at one point when 3 gendarmes decided to stand right in front of me and have a chat. Luckily they moved away as the race got nearer.
For this picture I was struck by the colours and the grouping into teams. I also liked the hand raised from one rider not to answer a question in school but usually done to attract the attention of team cars behind usually due to a puncture or other mechanical problem. The Tour riders will spread out across a road in what is called an echelon to gain protection from the wind with each one slightly behind the next though here it may have been because there was space to do it.
Congratulations to Geraint Thomas for his win in the Tour being the 3rd Briton and 1st Welshman to win this amazing sporting event in just 6 years
The shot was taken handheld with a Sony A68 with a Tamron 28-200mm zoom at 200mm. Editing was first in RAW using Capture One. More detail using Topaz Clarity. Then an adjustment layer to brighten the riders faces using a mask so really little editing needed.
