In a Galaxy Far Far Away

Now for something completely different which took a little more processing time than usual

The picture is intended to depict the view from the moon of a giant planet in a far off solar system. I have occasionally done this sort of image in the past usually as now when the cold and wet are not conducive to going outside. This was done entirely photographically from my own images. No digital painting and no planet or star images from others.

First for the landscape I used a picture taken from near a road looking towards the Volcanic crater of Montana Cuervo near Masdache, Lanzarote. The view makes for a great moonscape with little life having been re-established since the multiple eruptions which covered a third of the Island in Lava 250 years ago. The starting point for the planet was some rocks pictured in a cave on Lanzarote and converted into a pattern. Creating the planet was the most complex but I mainly followed an online tutorial. A blue base was used and then the rock pattern added. Then the distort spherise command applied twice at maximum. Layer styles inner glow and outer glow were used for the atmosphere. Another layer was used for the shadow. The Planet rings started out as some clouds in a picture taken in France. Again a tutorial was used and included Filter – Distort –Twirl at maximum 3 times and Transform Scale to flatten the rings. The moons were created using the same planet with different colours and reduced in size on the combined image using Transform Scale. Finally the stars started life as a picture taken near home from Pagham Harbour wall. There was a lot of use of selections, layers and layer masks to put it all together.

A point to note is that on an airless world such as a moon the dark night sky would be visible during daylight. The final Photoshop file had 11 layers.
