Spinal Spiral Staircase Somerset House

Another shot of the new spiral staircase at Somerset House the Miles Stair, located in the West Wing and designed by the internationally renowned architect Eva Jiricna. The Staircase was opened in 2014. This shot gives more of a view of the overall design and I was struck by how the treads have the look of a curving spine, maybe a fish. The stairs are in a private part of Somerset House and I asked to see them at the West Wing reception and spent about 40 minutes there taking shots.

The picture was taken handheld with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10 mm. I took 3 shots for HDR. 3 raw images 2EV spacing processed with Photomatix Fusion Natural setting for a natural look. The minus 2 EV image was copied in with a layer mask to apply only to the sky to reduce some highlights in the windows. A little Noise was removed with Topaz DeNoise. Topaz Clarity was used to bring in more detail. Photoshop was used to straighten and then correct verticals with lens correction custom. I decided a high key mono would be ideal for this shot and used Topaz B&W Effects for the conversion.
