Edward Beck & Son Ltd Boalloy Cabbed ERF 4x2 tractor unit Reg No YDB 596

Boalloy Cabbed ERF 64GX heavy duty 4x2 tractor unit Reg No YDB 596, powered by a Gardner 150 engine, was one of a number of brand new Boalloy cabbed ERF's introduced into the fleet in 1963 all with consecutive number plates YDB 596 to YDB 601.

Reg No YDB 596 was later fitted with a replacement LV cab made by Jennings as Teddy Beck recalls "A number of our Boalloy Cabbed ERFs had to have a new Jennings LV cab fitted after being in service for a while.

This was due to the fact that many of the early Boalloy built cabs were a complete and utter disaster with the front panel coming away, windscreens falling out and doors falling off etc".

YDB 596 is pictured here when it was brand new in 1963 while parked in Edward Becks depot on Greg Street Reddish Stockport as it is about to leave and deliver Blackpool Tram No 40 to the Crich Tramway Museum in Derbyshire.

Tram No 40 was built in 1914 for the Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramroad Company. It was renumbered 114 in 1920 following Blackpool's take-over of the Tramroad Company, but became disused as Blackpool modernised its fleet. 114 became a permanent way gang car in 1936 and ran as number 5 until 1960, latterly being used as a crew rest room in Rigby Road depot.

No 40 was restored in company colours for Blackpool tramway's 75th Anniversary in 1960.

In 1963 when the picture above was taken, it was presented to the National Tramway Museum.

In 1970 it went into store at the museum's Clay Cross store until 1979 when it was transferred to Heaton Park Manchester and restored to operation by members of the MTMS and the Fylde Tramway Society.

It returned to Blackpool in 1988 for the 90th celebrations of the Fleetwood Tramroad and again returned to Blackpool in time for the 1998 Tramroad Centenary were i believe it still resides today.
