Red-belly woodpecker jabbing cardinal 4935
Red-belly woodpecker jabbing female cardinal. I had wondered why most of the birds give the red-belly woodpecker a wide berth when he is at the feeding station. Now I know why! This jab could have been fatal if it penetrated through the skull bone. Large size shows better detail. This image was on explore front page for less than 1 hour on Feb. 18, 2010. The focal point was preset so as to catch flying birds as they landed on the stump. It was pure luck that the main activity took place within that focal plane and with my sharpest (macro ) lens on the camera.
