The Kitchen Garden at the Silas Everett House, ca. 1810: Tarboro, Edgecombe County, NC
The 1810 Silas Everett House with its period kitchen garden with old poles and sticks in raised beds. This house is one of the finest examples of the Carolina Coastal Cottage style of architecture in North Carolina. The design evolved to accommodate the hot, humid summers of North Carolina with its shed roofline and piazza rooms. These houses were once common, but are now becoming scarce, and were typically built for the more small-scale planter. The coastal cottage is considered to be late Georgian in style.
