Steptoe Butte Sunrise

Steptoe Butte is a famous landscape photographers paradise. I'd never been there before but had heard about the place for many years. I was not alone. Vans full of workshop photographers descended upon the site and stood tripod leg to tripod leg. I shot the sunset the day before and tried again this morning for the sunrise. Unfortunately the sunrise was at 4:59 am so I had to get up at 4:00 and get my wits about me to face the inevitable herd of shutterbugs. And, in fact, they were already lined up waiting to capture the magical orb ascending above the horizon. Well, it wasn't particularly dramatic so immediately after the sun hit the cloud line it was back on the bus for them. But about a half an hour later the sun started peeking through the clouds at various places and only myself and one other person were there for this interesting effect. Patience sometimes does pay off.
