Mayor Emanuel and CEP Pres David Marzahl discuss the benefits of the city's new ordinance. Listening to the exchange are BACP Commisioner Rosemary Krimble, CEP Client Rhonda Jones, CEP Volunteer Shaun Barton, Ladder Up Client Victor Adams, CEP Volunteer K

Feb 14, 2012 Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced measures to protect Chicagoans as they receive help preparing taxes during the current tax season. The new ordinance installs safeguards against predatory, commercial tax preparers. It also empowers the City of Chicago to investigate and prosecute tax preparation businesses for deceptive practices. These businesses take advantage of taxpayers unfamiliar with the filing process and they saddle their clients with hidden charges and unfair repayment rules.

Joining the Mayor at the podium, Center for Economic Progress’ (CEP) David Marzahl, and Ladder Up’s Christine Cheng spoke of the free, high quality tax preparation their non-profit agencies provide to low-income families and of the benefits the new ordinance will provide to low-income families. CEP Pres D. Marzahl said, “This ordinance will ensure that Chicagoans are made aware of their consumer rights before they sign away their tax refunds and hard-earned income to cover exorbitant fees and high cost loans by commercial tax preparers.”

Since 1990 Center for Economic Progress (CEP) has helped hard-working, low-income families move from financial uncertainty to financial security. CEP offers free tax preparation at tax sites in Chicago, Springfield, and throughout Illinois. Tax season sites are open from late January until mid April. Other services at tax sites include: Financial Aid U (FAFSA); Checking and Savings Accounts; Prepaid Debit Card. Located at its Chicago Loop office is a year-round tax clinic providing free tax related financial services.

These services are provided with the essential assistance of donors and volunteers. Center for Economic Progress enjoys a reputation as a trusted service provider, a strong and valuable partner in the communities served, and a responsible steward of donors' investments. Charity Navigator has awarded Center for Economic Progress with its four-star (excellent) rating.
