People-watching after the downpour

Russell Square tube, 15/05/2021

I love the way this turned out. The focus is actually on the maskless man in the cheeky shorts. He seems happy with himself. The man in the mask in the centre of the frame just walked into shot. My left eye was aware of him and I needed him for the shot. The rain that had just stopped made everything glisten and there was that spirit amongst people to go walk the wet streets and tingle in the freshness.

People-watching is a universally enjoyed activity and during lockdown the desire to watch the world pass in front of your eyes has become more heightened. It hasn’t been so easy to interact and so we watch.

Only yesterday, I asked a lady if I could share her table outside a burger bar and she replied: “But I’m smoking and I don’t have my mask on.”

“I don’t mind,” I replied.

“But I do,” she said nervously.

I took this shot standing under the awning at the exit to Russell Square tube. The light and the colours; the mask wearing, non-mask wearing; all caught my eye. The light drenched the rain-soaked Bernard Street as the people left the tube to swim the luminosity.
