Longyearbreen glacier

Polythermal Longyearbreen (5 km long) with its ice cored moraine. The ice cored moraine can be also classified as the debris covered tongue of the glacier, remaining at its LIA position, while the rest is melting back. Datable plants found in a meltwater channel indicate that the glacier advanced by 3 km in the last 1100 years. The LIA maximum glacier extension is pretty much the same as the Holocene glacial maximum (Humlum et al. 2005, Holocene).
