Sanctuary

Throughout antiquity, a sanctuary has symbolized a place of refuge or perhaps a place to commune with God. At its most basic, it is a shelter to find comfort from the enemies of our mind and in the physical world. Henry Asencio’s “Sanctuary” is neither about a time or a place. It seeks to capture the essence of inner sanctum—the human need for reflection and meditation. And it is this notion that the artist strives to communicate in this exquisite work of art. Asencio’s signature use of color, form and texture coalesce to reveal a contemporary dialogue between the material and the spiritual—the artist, his subject and his subconscious visions derived therein. Agitated by extreme texture and intentional use of color, Asencio unravels an unspoken narrative replete with seemingly incongruent, yet harmonious ideals of quietude and fascinations of that which intensifies the moment. The rich and deeply convincing work of art serves to prove Asencio’s mastery of his chosen medium and the artist’s perpetual desire to balance a human presence amidst his sure, artistic statements. As his private passions, observations and sensitivities awaken the emotional response of the viewer, so is solace in the midst of chaos.
