St Bakhita Centre Community Garden

by eccnswmedia

The Ethnic Communities’ Council of NSW received funding through the Community Grants Scheme - Westconnex to establish a community garden for the South Sudanese group at the St Bakhita Centre located in Homebush West.
The setting up of the garden began back in June 2018 through the engagement of a community garden expert who developed a site design for the garden. Three large garden beds and five narrow grow beds were put together, levelled, raised and filled with soil and mulch.
In addition, a green house, a storage shed, a work bench and a compost bin were installed at the community garden site to assist the community to care for the garden.
All this great work culminated in a wonderful Open Day that was held on Wednesday 14th of November where the volunteers, together with the Sth Sudanese women and the local community admired the plants and vegetables that were beginning to sprout
This initiative will provide nutritional benefits as well as eliminate social isolation and increase community connections.
