With western regions of the United States getting drier and fire seasons getting longer, wildfires are proving more unpredictable and thus more difficult to observe.

 

The U.S. Forest Service is now using data from the NASA/NOAA Suomi-NPP satellite to dramatically improve day- and night-time detection of wildfires, allowing firefighters to more precisely see fire boundaries and monitor outbreaks earlier.
