Aerocene Explorer flies at Killian Court
EAPS members Lodovica Illari, Glenn Flierl, John Marshall, Bill McKenna and Gianluca Meneghello - with the help of grad students Mukund Gupta and Ali Ramadhan - tested the Aerocene Explorer on Killian Court on October 28th. The Aerocene project is a collaboration between EAPS and Tomás Saraceno, Visiting Artist at the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST). The Explorer tethered-flight starter kit offers a new way to sense the environment. It floats without burning fossil fuels, helium, and other rare gases. It’s lifted only by the sun’s heat and carried only by the wind. The kit contains a tethered solar balloon, a photo/video camera, and a pack of sensors that constantly measure air temperature, humidity, altitude, and pressure while the sculpture is lofted. The group is planning more tests for the coming year in preparation of an outreach event next April during the Cambridge Science Festival.
