The generic name Nepenthes is from the Greek νηπενθές (nēpenthés), “a drug bringing relief from grief.” A drug of Egypt mentioned in the "Odyssey" as capable of banishing grief or trouble from the mind.
The specific epithet, ampullaria, is from ampulla "flask" in refrence to the flask-shaped pitchers of this unique species.
