National Maritime Museum Amsterdam
The National Maritime Museum shows how our culture has been shaped by the sea. Stimulating, interactive exhibitions allow visitors to explore 500 years of maritime history. Attractive object exhibitions show the best of our world famous collection. There are special exhibitions for children, including See you in the Golden Age and The tale of the whale. And last but not least: the famous replica of the East Indiaman Amsterdam is back at the quay. Het Scheepvaartmuseum has been completely renovated, but still exudes history and is a beautifully imposing and impressive building in the heart of Amsterdam.
The National Maritime Museum has the second-largest maritime collection in the world. The museum has an active policy of increasing the knowledge of this heritage and handing it down to the next generation of experts. The museum’s objectives, including presentation, the development of public programs and preservation of the museum's collections take priority. By conducting academic research on the museum’s collection and by promoting third-party research, the museum is also strengthening its reputation as a reliable and solid knowledge institution. In addition, the museum intends to be a proving ground for young academics and has developed three fellowship programmes. The museum aims to bundle more research and is focusing on a limited number of subject areas to create more synergy and allow its collection to be studied systematically. The key factors here are the existing collection, the available expertise and the five research themes. The entire collection of The National Maritime Museum can be found on the website Maritiemdigitaal.nl, the joint database of maritime museums in the Netherlands
