Nicolle Tower, Jersey
This was built in the early 19th century as a folly. The bedroom, living room and kitchen are in the hexagonal part of the building. The rectangular section is just for the staircase and toilet.
During World War 2, after the Germans invaded Jersey, they added a third floor and turned it into a look-out post. There's several bunkers very near by.
The third floor has horizontal slits for the look-out. The ceiling has the compass points N, S, O (i.e. Ost), W painted on it, and radian degree markings from 0 to 6400.
After the war it largely remained derelict until it was purchased and refurbished by the Landmark Trust. I met the previous owner who said farm workers used to use it, including a French man who called himself "Chef de la Tour"!
