Black Boy Lost on Tib Street

After being convicted of cock fighting five years ago Alfred Barnes has now finally had his licence removed by magistrates. The writing was on the wall for the popular Black Boy after the earlier conviction. It was only a matter of time before Mr. Barnes' fighting Bantams and Cocks drew the attention of the long arm of the law as Tib Street was frequently blocked with excited punters trying to get in to place illegal bets.

The Tib Street 'Black Boy' (a few doors down from Whittle Street) is one of two in the city named after Charles II Stuart (son of Mary Queen of Scots) who was famous for his dark complexion. The other is long millgate but has no business relationship.

Mr. Barnes will be launching an appeal against the revocation of his licence to sell beer but it is generally thought to be unlikely that anyone will still be drinking in the Black Boy in one hundred years time.
