City Life № 1: December 1983, Price 30 pence

“Our first issue of City Life in December 1983 was a fiasco, with a hideously dull front cover bearing a black-and-white photo of small boys watching a com-puter screen and the legend 'Best Christmas Micros'. We had decided, against our better judgement, to try a 'commercial' approach to appeal to parents, instead of photos of Lenny Henry on the cover. What made it worse was that I had been interviewed by reporter Rob McLoughlin for Granada Reports TV news, which gave it a pre-Christmas promotional push. We printed ten thou-sand and had distribution to cover Greater Manchester's newsagents. Even with a cover price of 30p, we were to find out some time later, the launch issue sold just a thousand copies” —Andy Spinoza via Manchester unspun: How a city got high on music M.U.P. manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526168450
