Installing the College Hotel plaque in the Kilburn Bullding in 1974. Left to right: lan Wilson, Roland Ibbett, Nigel Mackintosh, Theresa Davis and Dick Zobel.
The College Hotel stood on the corner of Manchester's Oxford Road and Brunswick Street from 1866 to 1974. It was a popular meeting place for some of the Ferranti engineers working on the Manchester computers.
By the time the hotel was demolished it had become a favourite lunchtime haunt of the ICL (International Computers Limited) design engineers who were on secondment at the University to work on the MU5 floating-point arithmetic unit - the same people who had previously been seconded to work on the Atlas floating point unit.
While the hotel was being demolished, the stone plaque from its front corner was rescued from the site by a team led by lecturer Roland Ibbett and several PhD students. They removed the plaque from the remains of the building and arranged for it to be installed at the Kilburn Building during an extension of the departmental library. It is now the Atlas Suite of the Kilburn building . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_of_Computer_Science,_University_of_Manchester
