Strangeways Siege April 1990 by Ged Murray (born 1946) on display in www.manchestergalleries.org
On 1st April 1990 a riot broke out at Strangeways Prison in Manchester, a notorious jail whose tall Victorian tower is a landmark in the city.
The prisoners' protest about their treatment developed into a rooftop siege lasting 25 days. The result was enormous damage to the prison, a decline in brutality but increased control.
Ged Murray, a local journalistic photographer recorded the prisoners' action for the Observer. This image was used for the poster of his exhibition at the Green Room, Manchester, which was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the riot.
