In Egyptian mythology the tears of the Sun God ‘Ra’ were transformed into bees on their fall to earth, providing liquid gold honey to Ra’s followers. Evidence suggests that ancient Egyptians were the first beekeepers. Manchester Museum holds one of Europe’s most significant collections of Egyptian artefacts. This design replicates hieroglyphs depicting beekeeping, with the Queen Bee elaborately decorated to resemble a sarcophagus.
