Sechelt First Nation 'reeling' after stabbing death at party

Members of the Sechelt First Nation were “reeling” Saturday after one man was stabbed to death at a drug-laden house party and his brother taken into police custody.

Gloria Joe said her distant cousin Conrad Joe, 32, died after being stabbed at a house party on Sechelt Inlet Road at about 10:45 p.m. on Friday. Phil Joe Jr., was arrested by the RCMP.

“We’re reeling,” an emotional Gloria Joe said. “We are trying to understand. We are stuck between a rock and a hard place ourselves.”

The Joe brothers, who split their time between Sechelt and Vancouver, were partying at the home of their father Phil Sr., who was away in Vancouver at the time of the killing.

A fight spilled out of the house and a neighbour tried to stop it from escalating but Conrad was stabbed. He was carried back into the house and paramedics transported him to Sunshine Coast hospital where he died.

“My husband went over and saw Conrad and said he wasn’t breathing,” Gloria Joe said. “It’s so sad.”

Band members said Phil Jr., 35, was arrested.

Police confirmed a man was arrested but on Saturday refused to reveal his identity.

“We’re saying the victim and suspect were known to each other,” said Cpl. Dale Carr, of the Integrated Homicide Investigative Team. “We’re not in a position to make any definitive statement about their relationship.”

Charges are pending.

Gloria Joe said the house was a frequent party place.

“These boys were … in and out of trouble quite often,” Gloria Joe said.

Sechelt Mayor Darren Inkster was shocked by the killing in what he calls “a safe community,” largely made up of retirees.

“I’m very surprised and saddened that this has happened in the community,” Inkster said. “My concerns and thoughts go out to the families involved. This is very much a safe community and this is rare.”

Gloria Joe said this isn’t the first time the brothers have been involved with the law.

Conrad Joe was sentenced to 10 years in jail for beating an elderly Sechelt doctor to death with his own cane in November, 1995.

Conrad Joe, then 20, was found guilty of manslaughter in February 1997 of James Farish, 78, a well-respected retiree.
