my first mistake
Was blowing off the reviewer who mentioned that you better know how to change a flat if you want to get to the Zigzag Loop trailhead.
That would be an understatement.
It sounded simple enough. Just head up 26, hang a left after Rhododendron, then go five miles until the road dead ends. And at first it was, simple, I mean. I found the road, Mr. Higgins was beside himself with happy visions of forest romping, and hey, the route is actually paved.
For about a half mile.
And then it changed into a teeth-rattling obstacle course that alternated between boulders, sharp rocks and sharp rocks in water-logged potholes.
My second mistake
Was continuing to abuse my little car thinking that maybe it’ll smooth out if I just go around this one more bend. ‘cause everybody knows that mountains get less rocky the higher they get. Yup.
After forty minutes and three miles, I finally gave up. Henry and I hiked the last two miles to the trailhead because, by god, we were going to get there.
Miraculously, the Acura’s tiny tires held and I wasn’t stranded in the middle of the wilderness alone... whew.
