1965 Alfa Romeo 1600 Spyder
The Alfa Romeo Guiletta and Guilia Spyders represent Alfa`s trademark shape of the 1950s and 1960s. The Guilias are characterized by front disc brakes and a larger, more powerful 1600cc engine. Their understated but charming lines and nimble, responsive platform have long made them an `all-time` car among Italian car enthusiasts.
This example has seen much recent mechanical and cosmetic restoration work. The engine has been disassembled and inspected, the transmission rebuilt, and the exterior, underside, trunk, and engine compartment completed detailed. The car rates well in both appearance and functionality.
The exterior has seen a recent, fairly high quality repaint appropriate for the value of the car. The body solid and straight, and appears to have never suffered any significant rust or rust repair. The panel match at the doors, hood, and trunk are all reasonably good. The front and rear bumpers, headlight bezels, grille and brows have all been re-chromed, while bonnet and trunk hinges were restored some years ago, and the window surrounds are probably original. The windshield is in good condition, the side windows fair. This car has a high quality, black canvas top, covered by a very nice black vinyl tonneau cover.
The interior consists of nicely re-dyed black leather seats, new floor mats, older carpeting with moderate discoloration, and repainted dash with good gauges and excellent chrome gauge bezels. The factory steering wheel remains, and is in excellent condition. This car has been tastefully modified to accept a Pioneer CD player with speakers placed in the doors.
The underside is extremely clean, and all the components visible from the underside freshly painted in silver-aluminum. Much recent cosmetic and mechanical work is apparent. The underside has remained remarkably rust free, and only one patch below the passenger’s seat is visible. There is a small area of rust under the battery in the trunk.
The engine compartment is detailed with nicely repainted inner finder wells and firewall. Complementing the beautiful engine bay is the completely rebuilt and resealed 1600cc DOHC engine. The radiator has been repainted in gloss black, and the Alfa signature aluminum double overhead cam covers nicely polished.
This car has been equipped with the very desirable Veloce twin Weber carburetors. Remarkably, and correct Veloce air box and air filter canister, and oil pan have been located to make this conversion one of the very best we have ever seen. The motor sounds fresh, and pulls strong with no smoke. The five speed transmission, having just been rebuilt, has a perfect second gear syncro. This car will likely be the favorite choice of the new owner’s stable!
