Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) takes flight

Had to try our the new 600 mm lens. It is a bit intimidating and unwieldly, but I have a feeling we are going to become good friends. I am trying to decide whether I should be using a monopod or a tripod with gimbal mount. Looks like it may simply depend on what I'm planning to shoot. Took some photos of our native birds this morning out in the back yard.
